Jongomero Walking Safari - Activities
Fly-camping mainly centres around walking although if tired the occasional game drive can be done vehicles permitting. There are two walks per day, the morning longer walk is approximately 5 hours long and cover approximately 12-15 km. The more relaxed afternoon walk covers at most 5 km and is roughly 2 1/2 hours long. Although you do not need to be an althlete to fly-camp, all the walking is at slow pace with frequent stops be it to have a drink of water or observe an animal, a certain degree of fitness is required as steep gulley crossings or rocky areas are frequently encountered. The walks all start off very informative and educational to enable guests themselves to start interpreting the tracks and spoor they see and as walks progress they become less informative as guests at a glance can decipher what is happening around them and can glean whole stories out of the surrounding bush.
Feel those original instincts return as you try to stalk as close as possible to an unwary giraffe without trying to be seen, heard or smelt and realise how difficult some of the predators jobs are as they try to do the same to gain their next meal.
When not walking among the animals, resting is the prefered pastime while in the fly-camp. Guests can lie on a shady hammock and fall asleep reading a book or nurse sore bones and weary muscles with the aid of a gin and tonic by the fire. After hot showers and a good night sleep, wake revitalised ready to tackle the next adventure.
Fly-camping can be done for one or two nights. One night fly-campers leave Jongomero after a hearty lunch and drive to the flycamp area. Simply jumping off the car begins the walk as you make your way to the fly-camp to arrive in time for sunset (luggage taken on ahead). After an early rise and quick breakfast to avoid the heat of the day morning the trek back to Jongomero last for about 5 hours and arrives back at camp in time for lunch.
For two nighters, instead of the walk back to Jongomero, guests embark on a lengthy morning walk in a different fly-camp area, arrive back at fly-camp for lunch and late in the afternoon can choose between a short drive or short walk. The return trip to Jongomero takes place the following morning.
