Selous Walking Safari - Activities
The fly-camp concentrates mainly on walking. Do not worry if you are not the fittest person as it is not an endurance test and the walks are not marched "military style". However a certain degree of fitness is required, the ability to walk sometimes up to 10 km on flat ground occassionally in hot humid weather. Rest stops are frequent, be it to take in the surroundings or observe an animal. Two walks are conducted per day, a longer (10 km approx) morning walk leaving after an early breakfast at sunrise returning 4-5 hours later in time for a substantial lunch. After a couple of hours siesta in the tents or a hammock guests are straight back into the action for a more relaxed afternoon stroll returning to camp for sunset.
The walks themselves are escorted by an armed guide who will teach the basics of survival, tracking, dung identification, medicinal uses of trees, birding and many other aspects of the bush which are often neglected when driving in a vehicle. Walks concentrate primarily on the smaller unseen yet no less interesting part of nature however there is always the feeling of wondering if you will bump into something big around the next bush, and frequently it happens. Lion are sometimes seen as well as the elusive wild dogs. Giraffe, wildebeeste, zebra, waterbuck, warthog and impala are plentiful and you are very rarely out of sight of an animal. The fly-camp is situated in a very elephant rich area and walking safely in the proximity of these massive ponderous pachderms is a feeling unrivalled by any other.
There is the option of a one or two night fly-camp. Both depart after lunch from Selous Safari Camp by boat to the fly-camp area. A short afternoon walk will then commence and get you to the fly-camp in time for sundowners. After a good nights sleep the morning entails a long morning walk which after completion the one nighters will be boated back to the Selous Safari Camp. The more adventurous two nighters can then participate in a short afternoon walk or drive for a couple of hours. The following morning involves another longer walk, returning to Selous Safari Camp by boat just in time for lunch.
